There are many homeowners willing to pay big bucks for the latest 3D LED 1080p HDTV with supposedly better and latest features. However, picture quality can be very subjective and many of us do not perceive any significant improvements that will tremendously improve our viewing pleasures. That is why I like the LG 42LD450 42-Inch 1080p 60 Hz LED HDTV which is available on discount for under $500 now.
It meets all my requirements for an affordable 1080p HDTV with great picture quality for a low price with no fancy features that do nothing but increase the price tag. For example, there are no internet TV applications such as Skype or Netflix etc (I have the $90 Roku streaming player already). All you get in the box shipped free is the TV set and remote control, a stand, a manual etc.
The design is pretty standard, with buttons and connectors all hidden out of view on the back and side. There are 2 HDMI inputs which is enough for me. The 2X10W built in speakers are quite decent but there is only one digital audio output and that might be a problem for those that wanted to channel the sound through their surround speakers or sound bar.
There is a pretty good feature included on this entry level 42-inch LED HDTV from LG, and thats the USB input. You can watch pictures, music or videos on the TV by plugging in your USB hard drive or thumb drive. Many different media formats are supported such as mkv encoded files. That means you can watch 1080p HD movies on the LG 42LD450 using just your USB hard drive after you have enabled DIVX and movie mode using a serial cable.
Both normal TV channels and HD movies look great on this basic 42-inch LG LED HDTV. The pictures are very bright and nice and comparable to more expensive HDTV from japanese brands. I am happy with the out of box settings for the pictures, but it is easy to change without referring to the user manual.
If you want to play video games on this LG LED HDTV, you will definitely be happy with its performance. Just check out the video sample on the top of the page. There is an automatic Game mode picture setting on this TV you can use for getting the colors for video game playback right. Do not worry about the 60hz refresh rate, since our human eyes are not that sensitive and can significantly see the supposedly better quality 120hz refresh rate LED HDTV. Not especially when a 42 Inch 120hz LED HDTV will cost another $500 more.
The LG 42LD450 is a best selling 1080p LED HDTV because of its high picture quality and cheap price. If you want to buy a new HDTV under $500, we recommend it as long as you have no need for more HDMI or digital audio output connectors.
